Capabilities & Collaboration
The Hubbard Lab combines experimental design, laboratory methods, field evaluation, quantitative analysis, and Extension to address questions in urban and One Health entomology. We collaborate on projects that fit the lab's scientific expertise, capacity, and public mission.
Behavior and feeding bioassays
We design assays that measure attraction, choice, feeding, contact, avoidance, and other behaviors that influence exposure. Camera-based observation and structured scoring can help explain why a management tool performs differently across laboratory and field settings.
Field and semi-field evaluation
We connect controlled experiments with field and semi-field studies. Capabilities include experimental placement, arthropod monitoring, replicate management, environmental observation, and photographic documentation of how insects interact with a tool under realistic conditions.
Arthropod rearing and life-history studies
We maintain research colonies and develop workflows for development, survival, morphometrics, feeding, and other life-history traits. These systems support both fundamental questions and applied pest management research.
Identification, microscopy, and specimen workflows
Capabilities include morphological identification, microscopy, image documentation, specimen preparation, and development of practical identification resources for research, surveillance, and training.
Surveillance and trapping support
The lab contributes to surveillance planning, trapping workflows, specimen handling, identification training, and interpretation of surveillance information. Current expertise includes New World screwworm preparedness and other urban or veterinary arthropod systems.
Animal behavior and sensing
We combine direct observation with wearable or remote sensing approaches to examine animal responses to arthropod pressure. These methods can add meaningful behavioral evidence to conventional pest counts and treatment evaluations.
Quantitative design and visualization
We support experimental planning, reproducible data organization, statistical interpretation, and clear scientific visualization. The goal is to align each analysis with the biological question and intended decision.
Workshops and Extension
The lab develops workshops, demonstrations, identification materials, producer education, and professional training that make current science understandable and useful for the people who need to act on it.

Each project begins with a conversation about the biological question, intended use, timeline, and fit with current lab capacity. Formal scope, agreements, and any sponsored work are established through New Mexico State University.
